Imagination

Imagination

This week, I’ve been thinking a lot about imagination—how it weaves its way into our lives, even when we’re not looking for it. In my 4th-grade classroom, we’re currently reading *Crenshaw* by Katherine Applegate, a touching story about a boy and his imaginary friend who appears during a challenging time in his life. This book has opened the door to some truly incredible conversations, and it has given me the chance to see something I don’t witness as often as I’d like: my students just being little.

Hanging in my classroom is a Mud Pie sign that reads, “Let them be little.” It’s my daily reminder to nurture and protect the part of childhood that is all too often overshadowed by the pressures of the world we live in. Kids don’t get to just *be kids* as much anymore, but when they do, it’s magic. This week, I had a moment that truly reminded me how alive and well imagination still is in my classroom.

We were having a discussion inspired by the plot of Crenshaw: if your family had to sell everything, what keepsake would you hold on to? Without hesitation, every single one of my students said they would keep their stuffy. They shared how they couldn’t sleep without it, how it’s the first thing they reach for on hard days, and even how some of them still have conversations with their stuffed friends. It was such a sweet, genuine reminder that childhood comforts and imagination still have a special place in their lives. For a few moments, I saw their vulnerability and creativity shine, and it was a reminder of why I love teaching so much.

This also got me thinking about the tools that nurture imagination in children. One brand I absolutely adore for this is Mud Pie. Their toys aren’t just objects; they’re invitations for storytelling and play. A hair styling kit can transform a child into a hairdresser for the day, complete with stories of customers and salons. A mixing bowl set turns a little one into a chef, creating imaginary recipes and running their own kitchen. And Noah’s Ark? It’s the start of an adventure to save the animals from the flood. These toys give kids the space to dream, create, and let their imaginations soar—and to me, that’s priceless.

Imagination matters. Whether it’s through a beautifully written book, a treasured stuffy, or a thoughtfully designed toy, it’s what keeps childhood magical. Let’s protect and celebrate it whenever we can. After all, as the sign in my classroom reminds me every day, we need to “let them be little.” My favorite book that we have in store is Trying by Kobi Yamada. I read it to my students every year, and it always sparks fantastic conversations about reaching their potential. Another book I added to my classroom this year is Noticing by Kobi Yamada. It’s the perfect story to encourage pausing and appreciating the moment. And, of course, the “What to Do” series is always a wonderful addition to any library.

We are currently offering 30% off children’s toys, soft books, puzzles, and play sets. It’s the perfect opportunity to add something special to your child’s world of imagination. I’ve added some links to some items that I think would be great to foster your child’s imagination.

Our sale runs through Monday, January 20th. Come in and add to your child’s imagination!
