Planning a day on the river or a hike to the summit?

Fuel up, pack up, and head out—from the best basecamp in Buena Vista, The Best Western Vista Inn  - this has been voted on by locals so it’s the truth! 😉

Growing up in Buena Vista, Colorado, you might think my weekends were spent camping and getting dirty outside. Surprisingly, that wasn’t my experience. I think I went camping maybe two or three times my entire childhood. It just wasn’t my family’s idea of fun.

Instead, growing up in the hotel industry meant our vacations were spent, well, visiting other hotels. But that doesn’t mean I missed out on everything BV has to offer. I had plenty of days hiking these beautiful trails and plenty of time spent on the river. I’m a proud member of the #ArkansasValleySwimTeam—and if you know, you know!

Whether you’re gearing up for a whitewater adventure or setting your sights on a summit, every great day in the mountains starts with a great basecamp—and for me, that’s always been The Best Western Vista Inn. Located at the gateway to town, with stunning views of Mount Princeton, it’s the perfect place to fuel up, pack up, and head out for the day’s adventures. Plus, after a full day outside, there’s nothing better than coming back to a comfortable room, a cozy lobby, and even a hot tub to soak those tired muscles.

If you’re looking for ways to explore Buena Vista like a local, you can’t go wrong with a morning hike up Midland Hill for sweeping views of the Arkansas River Valley. For something a little more challenging, try Harvard Lakes Trail—a gorgeous alpine hike that takes you to sparkling mountain lakes. And if the river’s calling your name, book a half-day or full-day float down Brown’s Canyon, one of the most iconic stretches of whitewater in the country. Whether it’s hiking boots or river sandals you’re lacing up, The Vista Inn is the ultimate launch pad for your Buena Vista adventures.

Local’s Guide to Buena Vista Adventures

Favorite Hikes:

Midland Trail: Moderate, about 4–5 miles round-trip, right from town! Stunning views over BV and the river.

Harvard Lakes Trail: Moderate to challenging. A beautiful alpine hike that rewards you with two clear mountain lakes—especially gorgeous in late summer.

Cottonwood Pass: If you want easier walks with huge views, drive up Cottonwood Pass and pick any of the short trail options along the way—or simply enjoy the pass summit views!

Ptarmigan Lake Trail: A local favorite! Around 6 miles round-trip, steady uphill, but the lake views are worth every step.

Fourteeners (for serious hikers): Mount Princeton, Mount Yale, or Mount Antero. Make sure to start early and prepare for changing weather!

River Runs:

Browns Canyon National Monument: The ultimate rafting experience—perfect for families and first-timers, but still thrilling enough for adventure seekers.

The Numbers: For experienced paddlers only. High-adrenaline whitewater!

Milk Run: A great, gentle float for beginners or families with young kids.

Paddleboarding the Town Stretch: If you prefer calmer waters, rent a paddleboard and float the stretch right through town.

Pro Tip:

Many local rafting companies meet right in Buena Vista and can pick you up just minutes from The Best Western Vista Inn. You’ll be out on the river in no time.

Wherever the day takes you—up a mountain, down the river, or just exploring the beauty of Buena Vista—there’s no better place to begin and end your journey than at The Best Western Vista Inn. Comfortable rooms, breathtaking views, and the perfect location make it the ideal basecamp for your next adventure. We can’t wait to welcome you to #BasecampBV and help you make the most of your time in the heart of Colorado.

Until the Next Time ~
