Discover Buena Vista Beyond the Peaks
There’s something magical about discovering a place for the first time—and rediscovering it again and again. Each time I return to Buena Vista, it feels like slipping into a familiar dream, yet seeing it through fresh eyes. Though I’ve moved away, each visit back turns me into a part-local, part-visitor, and I’ve come to cherish exploring BV just like someone seeing it for the first time. That’s what Explore BV Like a Local is all about. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a lifelong resident taking a fresh look, we’re here to help you discover Buena Vista beyond the peaks—starting right here at the Vista Inn.
My favorite tradition begins with something simple: parking on Main Street with my mom and strolling down the sidewalks. There's a rhythm to that walk, a sense of coming home with each step. We’ll often stop at Coyote Mezcal—I can’t resist getting a ranch water to sip as we wander. The shops, the views, the conversations—every moment feels like a celebration of the town I love. I am excited to try the new wine bar, Amalie Bistro when I come back this summer.
Time with my dad looks a little different—more rugged, more remote. We’ll head up into Fourmile, climbing the backroads in his Jeep, windows down, silence or storytelling between us. Those moments, surrounded by Colorado wilderness and family, are what I hold onto the most.
And when it’s time to celebrate something special—whether a birthday, an anniversary, or simply being together—there’s only one place we go: Wesley & Rose. Located inside the stunning Surf Hotel, this restaurant is our family’s favorite gathering place. The food is always incredible, the atmosphere is cozy yet refined, and it feels like the kind of spot where memories are made. Sitting around a table here, with the people I love, reminds me that the best moments are always shared over a meal.
Whether you're new to BV or coming back like I do, here's a list of some of our favorite local picks to help you experience Buena Vista the way we do—heart first.
