There’s something about the mountains this time of year—crisp air, clear skies, and the promise of summer just around the corner. This week, as I looked out at the peaks in the distance, I found myself thinking about the drive to Buena Vista. There’s a certain peace that settles in my heart when I’m heading back, and with Memorial Day weekend upon us, I can’t wait to return.
This weekend marks more than just a few days off—it’s the official kickoff to summer. I’ve closed the classroom door for the year, packed away my teacher tote, and stepped into my favorite role of all: teacher on summer vacation. And there’s no place I’d rather celebrate that first breath of summer freedom than in BV.
PaddleFest: Making Waves in Buena Vista
One of the highlights of the weekend is CKS PaddleFest, a four-day celebration of community, river sports, and music that brings the Arkansas River to life. From the town party at the Buena Viking on Thursday night to the freestyle kayak competitions and river races all weekend long, PaddleFest is pure mountain town magic. You can check out the full schedule here.

I’ll be making my way down to South Main to watch the kayakers at the River Park—one of my favorite Memorial Day traditions. And while I haven’t quite built up the courage to try kayaking myself, watching my brave friend Baylee river surf gives me a little spark of hope that maybe one day, I will. It’s so cool to watch her.

The First Signs of Summer
Another sign that summer has officially arrived in the mountains? Cottonwood Pass and Independence Pass have opened for the season on May 22nd. I’m hoping to take the Jeep up to the top this weekend to see the breathtaking views from the Continental Divide. There’s something about standing up there, above it all, that reminds me just how great our God is. His creation is stunning, and in moments like that, I feel so deeply aware of the beauty He has surrounded us with.

Small Town, Big Weekend
Beyond the river and the peaks, Buena Vista is buzzing with things to do. Whether it’s hiking through the Collegiate Peaks, soaking in the nearby hot springs, catching live music, or visiting local stores, there’s something for everyone. If you’re planning your trip, take a peek at the Visitor Guide for ideas to round out your weekend and book your stay with us at The Best Western Vista Inn!
And of course, no Memorial Day would be complete without my favorite tradition of all—BBQing with my family on my parents’ back deck. Memorial Day, to me, means family, friends, corn on the cob, bratwurst, and if I’m lucky, a really good margarita. I can already hear the laughter, the sizzle of the grill, and the clink of glasses raised in celebration.
But the moment I’m looking forward to most? Walking through my parents’ front door and seeing my dog, Sofi. It’s been too long, and I know she’ll greet me with a full-body wiggle and her signature happy howl.
Let summer begin!
See you in BV ~
Sammi
