There’s something magical about summertime in Buena Vista. The sun stretches long into the evening, the mountains stand tall in every direction, and the river whispers a peaceful kind of hush that you can’t help but follow. As much as I love an adrenaline-filled day on the raft or a hike up a winding trail, sometimes I find myself craving something slower. Something simpler.
That’s where fishing comes in.
Whether it’s sitting on the banks of the Arkansas with a sandwich in hand or heading up to a quiet alpine lake with nothing but the sound of birds and your thoughts, fishing offers the kind of peace that’s perfect for family days. You can pack a picnic, let the kids toss stones into the water, and take a deep breath. No rush. No noise. Just the gentle rhythm of the water—and maybe, if you're lucky, the thrill of a tug on the line.
If you're like me and searching for summer memories beyond the hiking boots and paddles, here are some of the most serene and scenic fishing spots around Buena Vista, Leadville, and Salida that the whole family can enjoy.

Buena Vista: A Fly Fishing Haven
Arkansas River:
Buena Vista offers prime access to the Arkansas River, known for its Gold Medal waters. The stretch near town is perfect for fly fishing, with areas like The Numbers, Big Bend, and Clear Creek offering scenic, productive fishing.
Cottonwood Creek & Cottonwood Lake:
Head west out of town and you’ll find Cottonwood Creek, which leads to Cottonwood Lake—a family-friendly spot ideal for shore fishing or paddleboarding after casting a line.
Ptarmigan Lake:
For the more adventurous, this alpine lake requires a moderate hike, but the peaceful setting and potential for catching brook trout make it worth the effort.

Leadville: High-Altitude Adventures
Hayden Meadows:
Just south of Leadville, this tranquil stretch of the Arkansas River has ADA-accessible trails and is perfect for families looking for calm waters and big views.
Turquoise Lake & Twin Lakes:
Both lakes are accessible and stunning, offering fishing from shore or boat. They’re stocked regularly and provide beautiful mountain backdrops for a full day of outdoor fun.
Crystal Lake:
A great option for younger kids or beginners—this stocked lake is small, easy to access, and known for frequent bites.

Salida: Laid-Back River Days
Riverside Park:
Right in downtown Salida, this area along the Arkansas is easy to access and fun for a laid-back day of fishing, wading, and watching the river flow.
Sands Lake State Wildlife Area:
This quiet, calm lake is stocked with rainbow and brown trout and offers an easy, peaceful option for picnicking and casting lines.
Boss Lake Reservoir:
High above the valley, this reservoir rewards those willing to make the journey with breathtaking views and the chance to catch native cutthroat trout.
Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA):
This stretch of river offers incredible fly fishing and plenty of space to spread out. It’s one of Colorado’s premier fishing areas and can be accessed at various points between Buena Vista and Salida.
Tips for a Peaceful Day by the Water
-
Pack a picnic: A blanket, sandwiches, and fresh lemonade turn any fishing trip into a memory-maker.
-
Visit a local fly shop: ArkAnglers (with shops in both Buena Vista and Salida) is a fantastic resource for gear, licenses, and insider tips.
-
Bring layers: Mountain weather can be unpredictable—early mornings may be chilly, and high-elevation lakes can stay brisk all day.
-
Have fun—even if the fish aren’t biting: Some of my favorite memories haven’t included a single catch, just the sound of water, laughter, and stillness.
