As 2024 comes to a close, I find myself sitting with a mix of emotions: gratitude, growth, and even a little disbelief at just how much life can change in a year. This was a year that challenged me, shaped me, and ultimately left me stronger. It was a year of transformation—a journey I’ll never forget.
It all began in February, with a phone call that altered my life. I was diagnosed with celiac disease, and in an instant, my relationship with food—and, in many ways, my world—changed forever. Something as simple as sharing a meal or deciding what to eat suddenly became overwhelming. Dining out, which used to bring joy, now brought stress and anxiety. Baking, once my passion and a way I connected with people, became a new kind of challenge. At first, it was hard to see anything good in this diagnosis. But as the months went by, I noticed something remarkable: I felt better. My body started to heal, my energy returned, and I began to embrace a new way of living. While celiac disease has its hardships, it has also given me the gift of feeling whole again.
One of the highlights of my year was traveling to Dallas with my mom in June for the Merchandise Market. We spent three days exploring, laughing, and finding inspiration for The View Cafe & Gifts. I’ve always cherished our trips together—there’s something so special about seeing the world through her eyes. Whether we’re hunting for treasures to bring into the shop or just sharing a quiet moment over coffee, those times with my mom remind me of the beauty of connection and the joy of building something meaningful together.
2024 also brought me to yoga, a practice I never imagined would become such an integral part of my life. What started as a way to move my body quickly became something much deeper. Yoga has become my sanctuary, a place where I can breathe, reflect, and find peace. It’s not just about the poses; it’s about the stillness it brings me in a world that can feel chaotic. Yoga has taught me to be present, to let go of what I can’t control, and to honor my journey, wherever it takes me.
Friendships have been another area of growth this year. Some friendships blossomed, bringing new people into my life who have enriched it in ways I didn’t expect. Others faded, and while that loss was painful, I’ve come to realize that not every relationship is meant to last forever. Each one taught me something, and the shifts in my social circle have allowed me to focus on the relationships that truly matter.
Coaching volleyball was, as always, a source of endless joy. There’s something magical about watching a group of athletes come together, overcome challenges, and celebrate their victories—both on and off the court. Coaching reminds me of the power of teamwork, perseverance, and the incredible potential we all have when we work toward a common goal.
This year also brought a big change professionally. Moving to a new grade level was a challenge that stretched me in ways I didn’t anticipate. It was hard work, but it was also deeply rewarding. My students continually inspire me with their curiosity, resilience, and ability to see the world with fresh eyes. Teaching is never easy, but this year reminded me why I love what I do and why I show up for my students every day.
And then there was summer. Spending those long, sunlit days in Buena Vista with my family and at The View Cafe was everything my soul needed. There’s something so grounding about being surrounded by the people and places that feel like home. Those moments—whether I was sipping coffee on the porch, exploring the mountains, or just soaking in the stillness—reminded me of the simple joys of life.
Looking back, 2024 was a year of learning to embrace change, even when it felt uncomfortable. It was a year of discovering strength I didn’t know I had and leaning into the beauty of new beginnings. I’ve learned to let go of what no longer serves me and to hold tightly to the things that bring me joy.
As I step into 2025, I do so with gratitude for the challenges that shaped me and the moments that filled my heart. This year taught me that life is never perfect, but it is always full of opportunities to grow, to connect, and to start again.
Thank you for being part of my journey this year. Here’s to another year of love, laughter, and learning.
Until next time,
Sammi
